WoW Player Discovers Hidden GM Island in Remix: Mists of Pandaria—A Forgotten Relic Returns
A World of Warcraft fan recently discovered GM Island in WoW Remix: Mists of Pandaria by using two different map discovery toys together. Although this developer-only location was supposedly removed from the game six years ago, the player provided evidence suggesting it still exists in some form.
WoW Remix: Mists of Pandaria is a special limited-time game mode where players revisit the 12-year-old expansion with modern conveniences to earn a variety of achievements and cosmetics. During the event, characters created in this mode are restricted to Pandaria, except for a few special instances.
However, it appears that this unique game mode enabled one World of Warcraft player to uncover a different relic from the past. While playing as a Timerunner, WoW fan and Reddit user Mechgyrasaur managed to locate GM Island, an old area used by in-game moderators before it was removed from the game six years ago. This was accomplished by using the newly added Warband Map to Everywhere All At Once from WoW: The War Within's Pre-Patch, followed by the Kalimdor Scouting Map toy. Despite the island briefly appearing on the user interface, it remains hidden on any in-game map.
What is GM Island in World of Warcraft?
GM Island was a mysterious in-game location situated far northwest of Kalimdor, beyond Teldrassil. The area was surrounded by unmapped space and kill zones, making it impossible to reach without exploits or GM powers. The island served as a base for GMs to move around the game world and even as a "prison" for misbehaving players during the early days of WoW. Although not part of Azeroth's official lore, the EU WoW website once featured a short story about two characters on GM Island. Unfortunately, GM Island was removed from the game in Patch 8.2 during the Battle for Azeroth expansion, partly because in-game moderation was no longer conducted there.
Despite this, players who follow Mechgyrasaur's steps can discover the same location. Fans were surprised to learn that GM Island still exists in some capacity, with some joking about it being a new zone in WoW: The War Within, and others speculating about how this glitch occurred. They were also amused by a second discovered location named "Delete ME," another relic exposed by the same glitch.
