Ed Boon, co-founder and creative director of Mortal Kombat 1, posted an image on his Twitter account featuring characters from horror movies marked with checkmarks and question marks.

The characters with checkmarks – Freddy Krueger, Leatherface, and Jason Voorhees – have previously appeared in earlier installments of Mortal Kombat as downloadable additional characters.

The characters with question marks – Ghostface, Pinhead, Michael Myers, Chucky, and Billy the Puppet from the "Saw" franchise – have not been featured in this fighting game series until now.

While Boon may have been hinting at one of these characters, modder @thethiny announced on Twitter earlier this month that he had discovered "evidence" of eight unannounced characters in Mortal Kombat 1 after conducting data mining.

Most of them are Mortal Kombat characters such as Noob Saibot, Cyrax, Jade, and Cassie Cage, but Ghostface was also mentioned among them. Consequently, it's possible that Boon is indeed hinting at Ghostface.

Ghostface is a masked killer known from the "Scream" movies and TV series, where a different killer (or killers) is revealed under the mask each time.

However, the character always maintains the same appearance and uses the same device to modify their voice in each film, making their appearance in Mortal Kombat significant for the entire franchise.

Mortal Kombat 1 was released on September 19 and has received overall positive reviews from critics, with a Metacritic rating of 84 on consoles and 83 on PC.

"The game looks stunning, boasts a fantastic story mode, and the Invasion mode will captivate solo players. It's important to note that it delivers enjoyment in gameplay. It's a must-have for fans, those who have forgotten about the series, and newcomers."
