According to Sega's statement, after the cancellation of the Hyenas project, Creative Assembly will refocus on genres where they have significant expertise
Developers from Creative Assembly speculated that the cancellation of the game was due to their "ambitious" plans and fierce competition in the multiplayer shooter genre.
Haruki Satomi, CEO of Sega Sammy Holdings, stated during a financial results presentation that the developers were working in a genre where they lacked sufficient experience, leading to the game's cancellation and staff reductions.
"Each studio has its strengths and weaknesses," noted Satomi, "but the favorable situation at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and successful projects prompted us to accelerate development in new areas for further growth."
He also added, "Creative Assembly excelled in the real-time strategy genre, but their attempt to create a multiplayer shooter failed due to the mismatch of user expectations in the long term."
Satomi highlighted that Sega plans to reevaluate the structure of its European studios, focusing on optimizing processes and developing specialized genres in which the studios have shown strength.
Following the cancellation of the game at Creative Assembly, there were dissenting statements from employees pointing to a lack of clear leadership, engine changes, and excessively cautious design, which they believe contributed to the project's failure.
