Overwatch 2 Unveils Exciting Enhancements to Competitive Play in Season 10
Following the significant upgrades in Season 9's "Champions," Overwatch 2 is set to revolutionize Competitive Play even further in the upcoming Season 10. While Season 9 witnessed a complete reset of Competitive ranks and the introduction of the prestigious Champion rank, the game's director, Aaron Keller, has hinted at additional improvements on the horizon.
In a recent blog post titled "Director’s Take" by Overwatch 2, Aaron Keller outlined some forthcoming changes that players can anticipate in both the latter part of Season 9 and the entirety of Season 10. One notable adjustment is the removal of grouping restrictions based on skill rank, allowing players of all levels to team up in Competitive Play. To balance this, the matchmaking system will ensure that wide groups face other wide groups, while narrow groups will exclusively compete against their counterparts.
The Competitive Progress screen in Overwatch 2 is also in for a makeover, featuring new elements such as Match History, a Scorecard, role-specific titles, a scoreboard rank range, and potential Top 500 improvements down the line.
Key Overwatch 2 Season 10 Competitive Changes:
- Elimination of skill restrictions on groups.
- Enhanced matchmaking, ensuring wide groups face each other and narrow groups compete exclusively against similar groups.
- Exciting additions to the Competitive Progress screen, including Match History, a Scorecard, role-specific titles, and a rank range on the scoreboard.
- Anticipated Top 500 improvements, potentially rolling out after Season 10.
Aaron Keller shared that the Competitive changes introduced in Season 9 have been met with overwhelming popularity. Competitive Play now constitutes 45% of total gameplay hours, up from the previous 35%, surpassing Quick Play in popularity for the first time in Overwatch 2. Keller clarified that it is not a decline in Quick Play participation but rather an increase in the number of players exploring Competitive Play during Season 9.
This Director’s Take also teased other significant adjustments, including faster bots and shorter game times in Push, as well as speed enhancements in Flashpoint and during defender setup on Hybrid and Escort. Players can anticipate these exciting changes, alongside the Competitive improvements, throughout the latter part of Season 9 and into the upcoming Season 10.
