The idea of Project U was that ten teams of four players would fight against crowds of robots and then face a boss in a narrowed ring. While the developers liked this structure, they were unable to achieve the required level of replayability, which is critical for the success of multiplayer projects. The team spent significant budgets on constant changes - new variations of maps, bosses, but even at playtests in February 2024, the game still lacked replayability.

In March, Ubisoft Annecy decided to stop development of Project U, which had been going on for five years. Both project leaders moved to new positions: Mathieu Granjon joined the development of the new Assassin's Creed game, and Damien Kiken recently started working for DICE on the new Battlefield.

However, instead of cancelling Project U completely, Ubisoft executives noted that PvE games can still be successful, citing the example of Helldivers 2. The game was returned to the incubation stage with a new producer and a small team to explore new ideas.

However, insider Tom Henderson, who told the story, noted that both former and current Project U developers are not sure that the project will be successful.
