WePlay Esports are about to host at least six seasons of the Academy League
Evgeny 'Hitras' Shepelev, who holds a senior position in the esports department of WePlay Esports, gave an interview for the CS: GO portal HLTV, in which he spoke about the company's plans for the near future. According to Eugene, WePlay Esports already has an agreement with esports organizations on their further participation in academic leagues. The minimum number of scheduled WePlay Academy League equals six championships:
We agreed with the teams that we will spend six seasons, one per quarter, but we will not stop there. From the success of the first season, you can see that this is necessary for the whole scene, and I believe that we will continue to improve everything that we did in the first season.
I am pleased with this opportunity and look to the future with great optimism. We have teams, talents and people involved behind the scenes. I can't wait to see what it looks like and where it goes in the future. Let's say the fruits of our labor can be appreciated during the third or fourth season.
Eugene also said that WePlay Esports is not against going offline when the opportunity arises. The word "opportunities" means the availability of a certain amount of funds, as well as the consent of all participating clubs to come to the LAN-event. He is optimistic about hosting the championship in a LAN format, but this will take some time.
Shepelev does not exclude the possibility of the WePlay Academy League moving into something similar to the ESL Pro League.
According to Evgeny Shepelev, WePlay Esports dream of holding a Tier-1 CS: GO tournament, but cannot realize their ambitions due to the emerging monopoly on the esports market. Of course, he noted ESL and BLAST as the main competitors, which scored the entire calendar with their events so much that they leave almost no time for other tier-1 championships.
The head of esports department at WePlay Esports said the following:
We really want to do this (to hold a Tier-1 championship), but let's be realistic - it's very difficult. The reason is very simple: the calendar is saturated due to the market monopoly. As soon as the opportunity presents itself, we will definitely hold a tier-1 tournament, maybe even a Major, as we did in Dota 2. We know that we can organize one of the best CS: GO tournaments, if not the greatest in the history of the discipline. We are ready to take on this challenge.
This year there will be no such opportunity. We are ready to host tournaments of the highest level, including in other countries, in large arenas, but we need slots in the calendar. The two giants are currently in talks with each other, and it is important for us to understand what the schedule will be. We already have some agreements, but without them we cannot do anything.
WePlay Esports held the first season of the WePlay Academy League in August 2021. The total prize fund of the championship was $ 100,000, and eight academic rosters were involved in its distribution. The final stage of the tournament was held offline, and the venue was WePlay Esports Arena, located in the capital of Ukraine, Kiev. Mouz NXT became the winners of the competition. The team beat Young Ninjas in the final match 3-1 and earned the main cash prize of $ 45,000.
